The Annual George Lindsey/UNA
Film Festival

University of North Alabama, Florence Alabama

About the Festival

The Annual George Lindsey Film Festival is sponsored by the University of North Alabama in cooperation with alumnus Dr. George Lindsey.  The Festival is a non-profit cultural and educational endeavor, organized to utilize films and video as a tool for education. Entries will be shown throughout the weekend for festival attendees.

The film and video competition is a vital aspect of the George Lindsey/UNA Festival.  The preliminary judging committee will select the best works submitted and these will be screened as part of the Festival.  A new committee of judges will view all selected works for the Festival and choose winners in the various categories.

To submit film or video for consideration, please complete a form, which can be obtained by calling (256) 765-4592 or e-mailing the Festival, enclose a VHS copy of the entry (no Super-VHS or PAL copies can be accepted) with the completed form, and a synopsis of the entry in 50 words or less.  The non-refundable processing fee (Professional or Faculty Category $50; Student Category $25; payable in US dollars, check or money order made out to UNA Film Festival Competition) must accompany each entry.  Your video or film will not be returned; submitted entries may be used for publicity or for viewing during the Festival.

Only video or films are eligible for competition.  To enter more than one film make a separate copy of the application for each entry.  All submissions must be postmarked by January 15, 2004.

Re-Cap of the 1998, 1999 and 2000 Annual George Lindsey/UNA TV and Film Festivals

The First George Lindsey/UNA Television and Film Festival celebrated its inaugural year on the campus of UNA on April 10-11, 1998.  The 1998 Festival spotlighted the television and movie work of Dr. Lindsey and also featured appearances by Tom Cherones, the director of the now-classic Seinfeld and the NBC hit show NewsRadio, and George Yanok, an award winning writer and producer of many shows, including Welcome Back Kotter.  He has been working in the past couple of years with the Nashville Network in Tennessee.

The Second George Lindsey/UNA Television Film Festival featured Ernest Borgnine, academy award-winning actor. During the 1999 Festival, Borgnine held the east coast premiere of his new movie "Abilene" and announced donation of his personal script collection, many bound in leather and bearing his preparation notes, to the University of North Alabama Library.

Stephen Root, star of King of the Hill and Ladies Man but known best in his role as the Tishomingo County, Mississippi radio station manager in O Brother Where Art Thou?, was the featured artist for the Third George Lindsey / University of North Alabama Film Festival, April 27-29, 2000. Red Laser Link added for 2010-2011 Festival goers.

Root is known for bringing special qualities to any role he plays. Stephen starred as "Jimmy James," the owner of the WNYX news radio station, in NewsRadio. For developing the James character, Root pulled from his father, a Wyoming cowboy. "My father, who grew up on a ranch in Wyoming and became a construction supervisor, just knew how to get things done in a simple, to-the-point manner," the actor said.

Root, who starred as Milton Waddams with Jennifer Aniston in the movie Office Space which aired on HBO, also played "Gene" on Ladies Man, a half hour CBS comedy. During the 2000 Festival, Root donated valued scripts to the Festival Archives in the UNA Library.

The 1998, 1999 and 2000 Festivals and all of the 2000+ Festivals featured national, professional and student competitions. A complete list of winners may be found on the George Lindsey Festival pages presented by the UNA Library.  The Golden Lion Award was presented to all first place category winners.
